There’s nothing more fulfilling than hearing that a design project has not only delighted a client but also inspired their friends. That’s exactly what happened recently when one of my previous clients hosted friends in their home. Their guests were absolutely loving the bold colours, playful furniture, and eclectic styles we had created together.
One of those friends reached out to me directly, with an incredible idea: surprising their three children with newly designed rooms. How could I resist?
Meet Julie and Charlie
Julie and Charlie, the parents behind this thoughtful gesture, were a dream to work with. They made quick decisions, embraced my designs from the very start (the dream, but not always the case!), and kept the project moving smoothly from start to finish. Their trust and enthusiasm made this one of the most enjoyable projects I’ve had the pleasure of working on.
Joseph’s Room: A Cozy and Creative Haven
For young Joseph, the goal was to integrate some of his beloved existing items and artwork while giving the room a fresh, playful update. We landed on a colour palette of light blue, yellow, beige, and terracotta brown, creating a warm, cheerful atmosphere.
As always, I turned to Decwood for decorative moulding. Their designs are simply to die for, and I love using them to add texture and depth to a space. For Joseph’s room, we painted the ceiling and half the walls blue and added a fun, stripy textured wallpaper that gives the room personality without overwhelming it.
Because Joseph loves to read, we created a custom reading nook, cleverly combined with storage and a desk. It’s the perfect multi-functional space for a creative and curious young mind.
Sophie and Evie: A Hidden Connection
The older girls, Sophie and Evie, had the most delightful feature in their rooms: a hidden door connecting the two spaces. We took full advantage of this charming detail and designed bespoke raised beds with built-in storage, bookshelves, secret nooks, and pull-out desks. We even created a little pathway so they could use the hidden door as a playful shortcut between their rooms.
When it came to colours, we kept them distinct yet complementary.
Sophie’s room was colour-drenched in a California sunset-inspired palette of peach and blue, with a secret reading nook nestled in the eaves and a beautifully painted ceiling.
Evie’s room featured warm, rich tones of shrimp pink and soft terracotta brown/orange, with a terracotta-painted ceiling to make the space feel cosy and inviting.
A Joyful Reveal
The kids' excitement and happiness when they saw their rooms for the first time was everything. Their smiles said it all—this was a successful project in every way.
Wrapping Up
This was a super fun, easygoing project filled with vibrant colours, creative designs, and flawless execution by my amazing trades. Best of all, we finished just in time for Christmas, giving the family a perfect holiday gift.
To Julie, Charlie, and their wonderful kids—thank you for letting me be part of this magical surprise.
X,
Charlotte
